NO DATE FOR REPAIRS

THE Dawel Bridge along the busy Dagupan-Bonuan-San Fabian Road is still undergoing detailed assessment by the 2nd Pangasinan District Engineering and the Regional Engineering Offices (with the Technical Staff from the DPW central office) after it was partially damaged by the Magnitude 5 earthquake that hit Dagupan and Pangasinan last July 27.

The Dawel Bridge is one of the three major infrastructure projects in Region 1 damaged by the Magnitude 7 earthquake that hit Northern Luzon last July 27.

The other two are the Tagudin-Cervantes Road in Ilocos Sur which is not passable to all vehicles, and the San Luis Bridge in La Union, along the Rosario-Pugo Road, which is passable only to vehicles weighing up to 10 tons.

Meanwhile, because of the partial damage on its truss support, the Dawel Bridge continues  to be passable for vehicles up to five tons, but for only one way.

The DPWH advised vehicles weighing above five tons to take the Pangasinan-La Union Inter-Provincial Road (Pangasinan-Mangaldan Road Section) and vice versa.

Mayor Belen Fernandez has mobilized the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) and barangay officials to join a team from the 2nd Pangasinan Engineering District to maintain/control the area 24/7 for the smooth flow of traffic.

Meanwhile, Engineer Editha Manuel of the 2nd and 4th Engineering District Offices of the DPWH, said the bridge will soon undergo repairs – although not setting a definite date for it.

Manuel also said the bridge will first be restored, as plans for building a replacement is also being looked into.

“Kabilang sa rekomendasyong gagawin sa tulay ay ang agarang pagre-restore at saka na susunod ang gagawing replacement o pagpapalit ng tulay”, she said.

The Dawel Bridge has also survived the 1990 Luzon Killer Quake which also jolted Dagupan City, making it a candidate for replacement.

Manuel also said that the slope protection of the Cayanga Bridge is also set to be repaired.

It was also damaged during the earthquake on July 27. (Leonardo Micua/Ahikam Pasion)
