WITH less than two weeks left before stepping down head of the Department of Health (DOH), outgoing Secretary Francisco T. Duque III mulls teaching in their family-owned  university, the Lyceum-Northwestern University in Dagupan City.

As a co-terminus cabinet official under outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, he is also set to step down come June 30.

At the Kapihan sa Manila Bay Forum held on Wednesday morning, June 8, Duque said he is going to work in a private sector after stepping down.

“I’m going back to the family-owned university in Dagupan City”, said Duque.

He wants to teach in the university’s College of Medicine, and plans to introduce universal healthcare in the already expanded college’s medical curriculum. This, he said, will help young and aspiring doctors to appreciate and help implement the Universal Healthcare Law.

The Universal Healthcare Law was signed in 2017 by President Rodrigo Duterte, giving every Filipino access to quality healthcare, as everyone is enrolled in the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).

Duque’s stint as DOH Secretary has been marked by challenges, particularly over the  management of the COVID-19 pandemic that included calls for his resignation.

Recently, the Philippines was named as one of two Asian countries in the world that effectively managed and contained the COVID-19. Vietnam was the other country.

With Duque’s stint ending, “We are ready to present our transition plans”, Duque intoned. (Ahikam Pasion)
