Still no COVID-19 surge in Region 1 after elections

THE fear that COVID-19 will again surge after the elections has not happened in the Ilocos Region.

This was the observation of Dr. Rheuel Bobis, COVID-19 focal person in Region 1 last May 26 when he told the Kapihan sa Ilocos  that there were only 41 active COVID-19 cases recorded in the region.

He added that the reported cases were mild and asymptomatic cases and not a single case was classified as severe and moderate case. The daily average cases remained at a single digit—at five daily average.

He said the positivity rate in the region remains at 0.4 percent, which means it is way below the requirement of the World Health Organization (WHO) for a positivity rate of 12 percent.

Still, Bobis urged people not be complacent and practice the minimum health standard to stay away from COVID-19, like the wearing of face masks, maintain social distancing, frequent washing of hands with water and alcohol and more importantly, to get themselves vaccinated.

He attributed the high vaccination rate in Region 1 for the slowdown of the disease.

Meanwhile, he reported that the three Omicron sub-variants that already entered the country have not infected anyone in the region although one sub-variant was already detected in a traveler from Finland in Baguio City. (Leonardo Micua)
