1,437 CANDIDATES FILED

THE week-long period for the filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2022 National and Local Elections was orderly and peaceful.

This was the assessment of Comelec Provincial Election Supervisor Marino Salas at the closing period of the last day of filing on October 8. Pangasinan and credited all the candidates and stakeholders for the successful conduct of the filing of certificates.

Salas said there were 61 aspirants that filed in the provincial level as compared to 45 in the 2019 elections as he noted that there were more with party affiliations.

At the provincial level, there are four candidates for governor, two for vice-governor, 16 for House of Representatives and 39 for Sangguniang Panlalawigan members.

In the municipal and city levels, 141 aspirants filed for mayor, 128 for vice mayor and 1,109 for councilors in the 48 local government units of Pangasinan.

He said political parties and coalitions that fielded candidates can substitute a candidate after COC filing if a candidate dies, withdraws or is disqualified by the Commission.

Independent candidates cannot be substituted.

Salas clarified that a candidate can withdraw anytime or file for a higher position as long as requirements are met and filing is within the prescribed period. (PIA Pangasinan/ VHS)
