ONLY 1.09-M REGISTERED

THIS school year 20121-2022, only 1,043,505 pupils and students in Kindergarten to Grade 12, both in public and private schools were enrolled which is fewer by 243,687 compared to the last school year.

This was reported by the Department of Education (DepEd) in Region 1 in its Quick Count Enrollment Data which showed the current number is lower than last school year’s 1, 287, 192 enrollees.

Cesar Bucsit, head of the Public Affairs Unit at the Office of the Regional Director, said none of the 14 School Division Offices (SDOs) in the region reached a 100-percent enrolment turnout.

He said Batac in Ilocos Norte attained the highest enrollment rate at 96.48 percent while the Pangasinan Division 2, one of the region’s largest SDOs, is the lowest at 69.77%.

In Pangasinan, total enrollees were: Alaminos City with 76 percent enrollment rate (20,818 enrollees this year compared to 27,557 last year, Dagupan City at 67 percent (34,694 this year from 51,866 last year), Urdaneta City at 82 percent  (32,889 this year from 39,890 last year), San Carlos City at 60 percent (33,377 this year from 55,543 last year);

Pangasinan I at 65 percent (227,953 this year from 351,376 last year), Pangasinan II at 53% (145,888 this year from 273,740 last year).

Bucsit attributed the decrease to change of residence, low number of incoming learners, most are not yet enrolled due to COVID- 19 cases surge, some are still enrolling, no gadget/connection for the online enrollment and there are undecided parents.

But he remains optimistic the number of enrollees will still increase in the weeks ahead.

It showed that there are already 941,919 enrollees in public schools, 96,189 in private schools and 4,397 came from State Colleges and Universities/ Local Universities and Colleges.

Bucsit assured parents that minimum health and safety protocols will be strictly observed when claiming the learning modules of their children.

The data were prepared by Joey Pimentel, DepEd Region 1 statistician and noted by Cecilia Rosido, chief of the Policy, Planning, and Research Division.

Meanwhile, some towns have moved the opening of classes to Oct. 4 from Sept. 13 due to the surge of COVID-19 cases in the province. (Eva Visperas/ Jerick Pasiliao / Ahikam Pasion)
