AMID SURGE IN COVID PANDEMIC

IN view of the executive orders of some mayors in Pangasinan directing the suspension of the opening of classes for school year 2021-2022 in their respective areas, the regional director of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Region 1 is encouraging “all school activities be conducted online and other alternative mode which does not require face-to-face transaction”.

The directive was issued by DepEd Region 1 Director Tolentino Aquino’s message to schools superintendents posted on Facebook ostensibly to ensure the safety of pupils and students.

Cesar Bucsit, head of the Public Affairs Unit at the Office of the Regional Director, said mayors in 15 Pangasinan towns, namely Aguilar, Labrador, Mangatarem, Anda, Basista, Sta. Barbara, Mapandan, Malasiqui, Calasiao,. Urbiztondo, Bugallon, Binmaley, Villasis, Binalonan, and Asingan and the three cities, namely Dagupan City, San Carlos City and Urdaneta City have declared suspension of class opening to Oct. 4 amidst COVID cases surge.

He clarified that no other schools divisions in the provinces of La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte that declared a suspension of class opening for school year 2021-2022.

Meanwhile, Aquino expressed his appreciation to teachers, school administrators and school officials “for keeping our learners academically engaged despite the difficulties and challenges brought by the current health situation”.

“As we visit from house-to-house, we have observed how our teachers have creatively partnered with parents and other household support to deliver education at the doorstep of every learner,“ he said.

He cited the support and cooperation of local government units, political leaders and other stakeholders for making the opening orderly.

“We are confident that we will be able to do it better this time as we have already learned from the past,” Aquino added. (Eva Visperas)
