JUST for a week, the number of active COVID-19 patients in Pangasinan soared to a new high of 2,492 on August 26, from 1,169 last August 19, marking the biggest surge of cases  yet in a single week since the start of the contagion last year.

Records showed that from August 20 to 26, there were 1,997 new COVID-19 cases that were recorded as compared to only 700 patients that recovered while 100 persons had died, a number that is also considered an all-time-high in a single week since COVID-19 was noted in the country in March of 2019.

This effectively brought the number of confirmed cases to 18,526, at least 16,089 were registered in the province’s 47 towns and cities while 2,437 was recorded in Dagupan, an independent component city of Pangasinan.

Recoveries were high at 15,547 while the death toll was pegged at 554, with the 100 fresh deaths already included.

Pangasinan is still on COVID-19 Alert Level 3 along with La Union and Ilocos Sur while Dagupan City and Ilocos Norte are on Alert Level 4, the highest level.

As gleaned from the monitoring of the Provincial Health Office, the number of COVID-19 cases began to surge startling August 22 when 202 new cases were recorded and it was an upward trend after that with 317 recorded on August 23, 344 on August 24, 489 on August 25 and 592 on August 26.

This may have prompted PHO to recommend higher quarantine classification for 12 LGUs registering 25 percent of their barangays as critical zones in accordance with the threshold set under the Omnibus guidelines of the national Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).

With the exception of Dagupan City which according to the tally has already accounted for 253 cases, Calasiao continues to be in front among the 47 towns and cities of Pangasinan in the number of COVID-19 cases with 165 cases, followed by Urdaneta City (118), San Carlos City (117), Bayambang (113), Pozorrubio (91), Malasiqui (90), Bugallon (80), Lingayen (75), Villasis (74), Binmaley (74), Binalonan and Mangaldan (59), Alaminos City (56), Sta, Barbara (48), Mangatarem (45), Aguilar (40) and San Fabian (35).
