VG Lambino highlights media’s role in crime prevention, community safety
VICE Governor Mark Ronald Lambino stressed the pivotal role played by the media in crime prevention and community safety when he addressed the local media during the induction of PNP Media Press Corps-Pangasinan Chapter on February 13 at the Magilas Multi-purpose Hall, Pangasinan Provincial Police Office.
“Your role as watchdogs helps law enforcement agencies and policy makers accountable, ensuring transparency and accountability in our justice system,” Lambino said as he added that media should exercise ethical and responsible journalism in its coverage of crime-related matters.
“Sensationalism and exaggeration can create fear and misinformation,” he said.
For his part, P/Col. Jeff Fanged, police director, cited PNP Memorandum Circular No. 2023-053 entitled “Revised Media Relations Policy” signed by the Chief of the PNP on September 11,2023 that emphasizes the importance of the media as a valuable partner of the PNP in providing information and education to the public thereby empowering the community and promoting awareness and public safety.
He said the newly organized PNP Press Corps-Pangasinan Chapter, can help disseminate information both initiatives and accomplishments of the PNP in its campaign on peace and order and against crimes.
Atty. Phillip Raymund Rivera, provincial officer of Pangasinan of the National Police Commission, underscored not only media’s important role in crime prevention, awareness and educating people, encouraging people to act and provide the public the ways and means on how to take part in crime prevention but further strengthening public trust in the PNP.
The following were elected officers of the PNP Media Press Corps: President- Hilda Austria (Philippine News Agency), Vice President – Badz Agtalao (IFM Dagupan), Secretary – Elsha Arguel (Philippine Information Agency), Treasurer-Eva Visperas (Sunday Punch), Auditor – Susan Yadao (DWIZ Dagupan), PRO – Liway Yparraguirre (DWIZ Dagupan), Business Manager – Jonathan Ortega (DWJE-Radyo Pangasinan).
The Board of Directors is composed of Violy Ferrer (Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan), Yolanda Sotelo (Philippine Daily Inquirer), Ahrjay Milen Gelo (Bombo Radyo Dagupan), Ahikam Pasion (Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan) and Russel Simorio (GMA News Dagupan). (Eva Visperas)
