SLU confers honorary degree on Archbishop Soc

THE Saint Louis University in Baguio City has announced the conferment on the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy (honoris causa) on Most Rev. Socrates Villegas, D.D., metropolitan archbishop of the Lingayen-Dagupan Archdiocese.

It is in recognition of his being an exemplary and religious civil leader, public servant, philosopher, social reformer, and agent of moral and social transformation.

Explaining the conferment, Saint Louis University said it is awarding an honorary doctorate degree (honoris causa) in recognition of an individual’s meritorious contribution for the advancement of a particular discipline, through noble accomplishment  and contributions in instruction, research, practice, and personal engagements which led to the development of the community, society and the nation as a whole, upholding the institution’s mission, vision, objective and core values.

Archbishop Villegas was appointed to his present post by Pope Benedict XIV in September 8, 2009 and was canonically installed on November 4 of the same year.

As archbishop of the Lingayen-Dagupan Archdiocese, Rev. Villegas opened the first diocesan theology seminary in Northern Philippines in 2013 called Mary Help of Christians Theology Seminary that grants civil master’s degrees in theology and pastoral ministry.

In the secular field, he was one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines (TOYM) in year 2000 and a Catholic Authors awardee in 1994, having authored 10 books of homilies and spiritual meditations since he was  a priest. (Leonardo Micua)
