Malasiqui learner wins National Painting competition
A Grade 6 learner at the Canan Elementary School in Malasiqui emerged as champion in the Department of Education’s 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines National Creative Painting Contest.
Reymart Gomez, sole representative of Region 1, bested 50 other entries from Grades 4 to 6 students in public and private schools in the region. Each region had three entries except Region 1.
Jay Visperas who teaches Grade 4 students in Canan Elementary School and himself an artist, said that he saw the potentials of Gomez two years ago and worked with him to develop his talent and lent Gomez his painting materials so he could practice and hone his painting skills.
Gomez earlier won fourth place in Sci-lympics national contest on creative painting and consistently won in editorial cartooning in local schools press conferences.
“Reymart was very happy when I broke the good news to him five days ago,” Visperas said.
The 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines National Creative Painting Contest with the theme “Victory and Humanity” aimed to increase awareness and inspire the youth on the bravery and heroism of Lapu-lapu and his men at the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521 a in defending the country’s freedom against foreign invaders led by Ferdinand Magellan.
The contest showcased the talents of the Filipino youth, the learners, through visual arts.
Gomez’s entry used oil pastel provided by his coach.
He said Gomez is from a poor family but is very talented. (Eva Visperas)
