Mayor Belen’s political will did it

THE rainy season is here, now comes the time to validate or question the decision of the DPWH and the Mayor Belen Fernandez administration, whether the elevation of the major commercial roads and the drainage system was the right thing to do.

The elevation projects enabled residents and motorists to reach their destinations in and around the city’s commercial districts, which otherwise would have been knee-deep during high tide, coupled with slight rains.

It’s funny that the detractors of the Belen administration have been posting pictures of still unfinished areas of the elevation on social media as if these are the completed areas.

Let the motorists and pedestrians make their testimonies known by showing that they didn’t have any problem reaching supermarkets, churches, bus terminals, etc.

Our headline for this issue about the 60-year-old dumpsite is intended to make Dagupeños understand that only political will can make impossible things happen.

For too long, past city administrations disregarded the health and environmental risks that the city residents faced every day. Worse, the Brian Liim administration exploited the situation as an opportunity to create corruption around the issue.

This clearing of the dumpsite will be a lasting legacy for the efforts of Mayor Belen to clear it, even losing partnership deals to help the city resolve the problem with very limited resources.

69TH YEAR OF PUNCHING. Unfortunately, I’m still unable to get my thoughts down with updates on current events in Pangasinan.  I’m still confined at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Global City to continue addressing some unresolved issues about my Stage 4 prostate cancer.

I should be able to update more in our next issue, our 69th year of continuous publishing, through the Covid years, typhoons, martial law, etc. We owe this achievement, unmatched by any other community newspaper in the country, to you our loyal readers and advertisers, and all who share our advocacy for good government.
