PNP-SAF cop killed in ‘peryahan’ rumble
A member of the PNP Special Action Force (SAF) in Samar province was beaten to death by a group of thugs in an altercation in Barangay Poblacion, Mapandan town.
Police investigation showed that a Patrolman Robert de Vera, 29, resident of Barangay Luyan, stepped in the middle of altercation in a barangay fair (perya) to pacify and stop a group of men that was becoming unruly without introducing himself as a policeman.
The group took his interference as rude and turned their rage against him. They beat him and left him for dead. De Vera did not have a chance to fight back.
He was eventually rushed to Mapandan Community Hospital by concerned citizens, but eventually died from his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Investigators recovered his service firearm, an unfired Masada caliber 9 mm pistol.
In a follow up operation led by P/Captain Hermie Raymundo, Mapandan chief of police, three suspects believed to have been involved in the beating of De Vera were arrested.
Raymundo did not name the suspects as filing of charges against them at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office in Dagupan City were being readied at presstime. (Ahikam Pasion)
