THE provincial government is earning to P1-million a day from quarrying fees, according to Gov. Ramon Guico III.

Guico told local newsmen during an ambush interview on Friday at the Provincial Police Firing Range that the amount is very significant and expects more soon as the activity proceeds in full blast.

The meager P12-M collection was based on the proposed in the annual budget for a year, he said.

Pero we proved na kaya pala ng P1 to 2M a day. Bakit?,” he further asked.

He noted that one of the barangays in eastern Pangasinan enjoys 40% share of extraction fee that amounted to P700,000 a month.

Guico said an ordinance was already passed increasing the extraction fee from P16 to P50 for all kinds of aggregates quarried.

He said the P34 per cubic meter increase that trucks haul and pass on to end-consumers will range from P60, 70, or P80 only.

However, he said that they have reports that there are businessmen with hauling trucks who charge as much as P1,000 per cubic meter and blame the province for the increase.

He warned those caught charging exorbitant amount that the provincial government will cancel their permits.

It may be recalled that the Sangguniang Panlalawigan passed a provincial tax ordinance amending the province’s 11-year-old Revenue Code and increased mineral extraction fees from P16 per cubic meter to P50 per cubic meter.

The Provincial Information Office reported that administrative fees ranging from P50 per cubic meter to P250 per c.m. depending on the volume of minerals loaded on the truck.

Under the new ordinance, 40 percent of the taxes collected will go to the barangay where the resources were extracted, 30 percent to the town or city and 30 percent to the province. (Eva Visperas)
