THE Department of Health–Center for Health Development Region I (DOH-CHD 1) recorded 138 measles cases over the period January-November 24 in the Ilocos Region, representing a 160-percent increase in measles cases compared to same period last year.

Dr. Rheuel Bobis, Medical Officer IV of the DOH-CHD, said only 53 cases were recorded last year in the region.

Pangasinan reported the highest number with 61 cases, 42 in La Union, 16 in Ilocos Sur, and 19 in from Ilocos Norte admitted to hospitals.

The increase in cases is attributed to the low measles vaccination coverage, and the easing of restrictions especially in wearing of face masks.

“The restrictions have made it difficult for children to be inoculated with the measles vaccines, and vaccine hesitancy on the COVID-19 jabs also affected measles vaccines as well”, said Bobis who warned the public that measles, if left untreated, may lead to death of patients.

He said the health department is eyeing to conduct a measles immunization drive in 2023. (Ahikam Pasion)
