Spike in COVID-19 infection rate attributed to Delta variant

REGION 1 Medical Center (R1MC) attributes the sudden spike in COVID-19 cases in communities in Dagupan City to the presence and high transmission rate of the Delta variant.

This was bared by Dr. Joseph Roland Mejia, R1MC director, in an interview over Aksyon Radyo and underscored the high bed occupancy rate experienced over the past two weeks

He also cited the data of the Provincial Health Office (PHO) that the province detected 23 confirmed Delta variant cases. However, 22 were already considered clinically-recovered while one died.

In a separate interview, PHO chief Dr. Anna de Guzman said two of the confirmed Delta variant cases were from Manila and Bulacan while the other cases were locally transmitted.

Mejia said the public should take the Delta variant seriously because aside from higher transmission rate, it could also possibly cause severe effects to an individual especially with underlying health conditions.

He said he warned and advised mayors three months ago about the expected surge and for them  to review the implementation of the quarantine protocols but to no avail. Nobody took his warning seriously. (Jerick Pasiliao)
