A six-year-old boy died after he was bitten by a cobra in Barangay Carusucan Norte in Asingan on Aug. 29.

Leonard Beltran, who had a speech and language impairment, had just eaten lunch and was having a siesta with his dad, Michael Beltran, in their room when the incident happened.

A cobra appeared from their window, passed through Michael’s stomach and bit Leonard in the head as he was then lying on his dad’s arm.

Leonard was rushed to the Asingan Community Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

When they returned home, Michael searched their house to see where the cobra could have been possibly hiding.

It was found in a hole near the house and Michael, and with the help of some neighbors, the snake was bludgeoned to death with wood and steel pipe.

Leonard’s body will be interred on Sunday.

His mother is an overseas Filipina worker.

Meanwhile, Dr. Anton Soliven, municipal veterinarian, said people should be wary of places that could be used by snakes as their home.

He said when the snakes’ environment are destroyed like in the case of flood, snakes will go to houses or on higher grounds.

“Do not disturb their environment and they will not attack because snakes are even more scared than humans,” he added.

He urged people to clean their surroundings.

He said snakes usually stay in poultry or in old pigpens whose holes in the underground can be their hiding place. (Eva Visperas/Ahikam Pasion)
