THE Dagupan Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) passed an ordinance increasing the monthly honorarium of all 593 barangay tanods in Dagupan by P500, effectively raising their stipend to P1,200 per month.

This was provided for in an ordinance proposed by Councilor Celia Lim and co-authored by all councilors present. The present monthly honorarium of each barangay tanod of Dagupan is P700.

Majority Floor Leader Michael Fernandez said the increased honorarium for barangay tanod will commence in July after Budget Officer Jessa Rayupa certified the availability of fund in this year’s city budget to finance the ordinance.

DILG City Director Marilyn Laguipo said since barangay tanod in the city should undergo capability building to ensure that they know their duties and responsibilities in return for their honoraria.

Laguipo asked barangay chairmen to update their lists of their barangay tanods in their respective areas and to extend new appointments.

Councilor Fernandez said the increased honorarium for baragay tanods must be incorporated in subsequent annual budgets of Dagupan City.

Fernandez also proposed the establishment of a trust fund in the city government to cover financial assistance for barangay tanods and their families in case they meet an accident or die in their performance of their duties, in lieu of a group insurance for them.

Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo said the increased honorarium is only a small measure to help Barangay tanods who are on duty 24 hours a day in maintaining peace and order in their respective areas.

According to Councilor Lim, the barangay tanods not only help maintain peace and order, prevent crimes and violation of human rights but in enforcing the health and safety protocols promulgated by the Inter-Agency Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases. (Leonardo Micua)
