THE detection of various COVID-19 variants in Region 1 was seen to be the factor in  the sudden surge in new cases for the past months in the Ilocos Region.

Based on Department of Health Center for Health Development 1’s (DOH-CHD 1) data, three COVID-19 variants were detected in 43 confirmed cases.

DOH-CHD 1 spokesperson Dr. Rheuel Bobis said 23 cases of the United Kingdom variant were recorded, 20 cases of the South African variant, while one case of P3 or the Philippine variant.

Bobis said 23 percent of different variants were from our returning overseas Filipino workers (ROFWs) and are being tested, isolated and treated.

He said they have to test negative before they are discharged from an isolation facility or health care center. (Jerick Pasiliao)
