THE arrival of the first 195 vials of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, or 1170 doses on Monday June 21 was a test case for its storage. It was immediately stored in the Region One Medical Center ultra-cold freezer.

According to the Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Region 1, the initial delivery of Pfizer vaccine was a test case because it is more sensitive to storage compared to other vaccines.

Health experts say the Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored in a -80 to -60 degrees Celsius in ultra-cold freezer, much colder than Antarctica’s average temperature of -49 degrees.

In contrast, Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccines may be kept in cold storage facilities at two to eight degrees Celsius.

Dagupan City government received 98 of the vials (588 doses) while the R1MC received 97 vials (582 doses).

After receiving its share of Pfizer vaccines, the Dagupan City government began administering it to qualified residents on Tuesday, June 22.

The first Pfizer dose was administered to a 31-year-old resident in the city, who belongs to the A3 priority group, or individuals with comorbidities.

Meanwhile, the city government is gearing up for the vaccination of the A4 priority group — including the members of the media. (Ahikam Pasion)
