PBBM inaugurates R1MC Cancer Institute
TWO MORE KEY INFRA PROJECTS BREAK GROUND
PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the inauguration of the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) Cancer Institute today in Dagupan City, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to provide equitable and high-quality cancer care under the Universal Health Care (UHC) Program.
The state-of-the-art facility—now officially recognized as a comprehensive cancer center—aims to become Northern Luzon’s premier hub for cancer diagnostics and treatment. Since its soft opening, the center has already served over 59,000 patients, according to R1MC Center Chief Dr. Joseph Roland Mejia.
Equipped with advanced medical technologies such as a 128-slice CT scan, 1.5 Tesla MRI, linear accelerator, and brachytherapy units, the Cancer Institute offers a full suite of services including pediatric and adult oncology, radiation therapy, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, and palliative care.
A Multi-disciplinary Tumor Board is also in place to ensure personalized and collaborative treatment planning.
President Marcos emphasized that the inauguration reflects his administration’s continued push to decentralize healthcare and bring specialized services closer to the people—especially those in underserved regions.
“Through facilities like this, we are not only investing in infrastructure but also in hope and survival,” the President said during the inauguration.
This comes just weeks after he signed Republic Act No. 12203, expanding R1MC’s bed capacity from 600 to 1,500, significantly boosting the hospital’s ability to serve a growing patient population.
Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez, incoming 4th District Rep. Gina de Venecia, as well as Gov. Ramon Guico Jr and Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III and DOH officials were present during the event.
Earlier in the day, the President also led the groundbreaking of two major projects in Pangasinan.
One is the P950-million initiative, the Paitan Dam Project in Sta. Maria town, a collaboration between the National Irrigation Administration and the Department of Agrarian Reform through CARP-IC and ARF funding under the Lower Agno River Irrigation System (RIS) which expected to enhance agricultural productivity across Pangasinan, Tarlac, and Nueva Ecija.
The other is the Sky Garden Project in Barangay Lucap, Alaminos City, spearheaded by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), aims to boost tourism and economic development in the region. (Eva Visperas)
