74 injured by banned firecrackers
ONLY 2% LOWER THAN 2019 REVELRY
SEVENTY-four persons have been reported injured by firecracker explosions at presstime, Friday, out of which two cases resulted in amputation of fingers.
The latest data from the Pangasinan Health Office is lower by less than 2% compared to last year’s data.
Twenty-eight more persons were reported injured after 46 persons were initially reported injured during the New Year countdown revelry in Pangasinan, or 2% lower compared to last year’s New Year’s revelry with 101 cases, according to data from the Provincial Health Office.
Provincial Health Officer Anna de Guzman said 23 suffered hand injuries caused by lighted firecrackers while five involved injuries on the knees/legs, four in the eyes, three in the abdomen, two cases each on the head/neck, back feet and one case each in chest area, the shoulder and axilla
There were two cases of amputation fingers in Dagupan City and Bolinao town.
The age group most affected was 6 to 13 years old that accounted for 82 percent and males were mostly the victims.
The youngest injured was a one-year old baby boy from Malued, Dagupan while the oldest was 45 years old.
The fireworks that caused injuries among victims in Pangasinan were: kwitis (25 cases), luces (16), 5 star (9), fountain (6), bawang (3), whistle bomb (3), boga (1), baby rocket (1), goodbye Philippines (1), mother rocket (1), watusi (1).
Twenty-three cases involved active players while 23 cases were passive.
In a late interview, De Guzman said she supports the total ban of firecrackers as the number of firecracker victims every year are seeing only slight decrease despite massive and intensified campaign of the Department of Health and the PHO. (Helen Martin/PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
