By January 6, 2020Headlines, News

OVERALL, the celebration of New Year in Region1 was generally peaceful with no crime recorded whatsoever.

This was bared by P/Brig. General Joel Orduna, Police Region 1 director, who said although no casualty was reported, there were 43 recorded violations of Republic Act 7183 (An Act Regulating The Sale, Manufacture, Distribution, and Use of Firecrackers and other Pyrotechnic Devices) as well as Executive Order No. 28 (Providing for the Regulation and Control of the Use of Firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices).

The reported violations included illegal manufacture of firecrackers, sale and use of banned firecrackers, indiscriminate firing from December 16, 2019 to January 2, 2020.

Records showed there were four cases of indiscriminate firing, three by civilians and one by a member of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU), that were recorded.

Only one case of stray bullet incident was recorded and this happened in Laoag City, according to Orduna. The suspect surrendered after a follow-up operation conducted by the Laoag City Police.

Meanwhile, 15 persons were arrested while three others are still at-large in operations conducted by the police against either manufacturers, sellers, and users of firecrackers and pyrotechnics in Region 1 in the advent of the New Year.

Police operatives also seized P189,539.00 worth of illegal firecrackers from different persons.

Orduna attributed the observance of a generally peaceful New Year to the cooperation of the public and the deployment of police personnel in the streets to maintain peace and order.

“I commend all PRO1 personnel who put aside their personal convenience and comfort in exchange for a peaceful, safe and injury-free holiday celebration,” he said. (Leonardo Micua/PhilStar Wire Service/ECV))
