LINGAYEN –Mayor Leopoldo Bataoil of this town wants communities to consciously help in  efforts to reintegrate drug dependents here who surrendered for reformation by launching ‘the Adopt-a-Surrenderer’ Program.

Bataoil said drug surrenderers must be helped to make them productive lest they backslide and return to their old criminal habits.

The town has 338 surrenderees since 2016 according to the municipal information office.

“We will work on something productive to make them partners in the improvement of the barangay,” Bataoil said.

He said former drug dependents will initially be tapped actively in cleaning and greening the town.

“We’ll have them join the clean-up drives, coastal clean-ups and even ask them to join the groups like Lingayen Bantay Kalikasan to become advocates for the environment,” he said.

Bataoil also disclosed the town’s plan to establish a model nursery or community nursery where the surrenderers could help plant and propagate fruits and vegetables seeds.

The program will also include counselling, values formation, spiritual reformation, and livelihood training.

Bataoil’s proposed project was initially presented to the Municipal Peace and Order Council, Municipal Anti-Drug Abuse Council and Municipal Council for the Protection of Children. (Helen Martin)
