LINGAYEN’S VM RACE

LINGAYEN–Councilor Judy Vargas thanked the electorate of Lingayen after emerging winner in the tough vice mayoralty race with Vice Mayor and lawyer Nepthalie Pasiliao (Lakas).

Vargas, grand-daughter of the late former Board Member Romualdo de Leon, teamed up with Second District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil (National Union of Parties).

Vargas garnered 25,249 votes while Vice Mayor Pasiliao had 25,073 votes.

Trailing by just 73 votes Wednesday afternoon, Vargas eventually prevailed over Pasilao after the results from two clustered precincts were added to the tally.

The unresolved vice mayoralty race in Lingayen dragged on till Wednesday night delaying the proclamation of winners in the Second District congressional race and the board members’ seats in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

Meanwhile, Congressman Bataoil garnered 30, 918 votes to post an insurmountable lead over Iday Castaneda that eventually ended the 27-year political reign of her political family.

Across the years, the Castañeda couple alternated as mayor of Lingayen, except when Jonas died in his post. He was briefly replaced by his vice mayor who was however beaten by Iday in the ensuing political exercise.

Led by the late Castañeda patriarch Mayor Jonas Castañeda, political clan never lost an election since the late 1980s. (Leonardo Micua)
