SOME 500 officials and employees at the Dagupan City government came out as volunteers at the Tondaligan Blue Beach in Bonuan Gueset on April 26 for a cleanup activity.

The volunteers were composed of city hall employees and department heads led by City Administrator Atty. Farah Decano, Department of Education (DepEd) Dagupan officials and teachers, members of PNP Dagupan, barangay officials, private stakeholders, and many others.

The activity was a joint undertaking of the city government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as part of the observance of Earth Day and Earth Month this April.

Maria Dorica Hipe, regional director of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) – DENR, said the activity sought to raise public awareness towards proper solid waste management and the importance of keeping coastal areas and beaches clean.

“We chose to conduct the activity here in Tondaligan because the local government was very cooperative when it comes to environmental initiatives,” added Hipe.

She said the activity was also one way of replicating national government initiatives such as the recent rehabilitation of Boracay and the Manila Bay.

City Pollution Control Officer Reynaldo Esguerra said the clean-up activity sought to remind beach visitors  and establishment, and shed owners of their responsibilities to protect Tondaligan from pollution.

“The ‘Solar Ko, Linisan Ko’ program is actively promoted and implemented in the city’s barangays.”. We are also working with private household and property owners and reminding them to maintain the cleanliness of their properties, ” said Esguerra. (CIO/ VDV)
