LINGAYEN—The provincial health office tells teenage mothers not to attempt to deliver their babies through the services of a ‘hilot’.

This warning was issued by Dr. Annade Guzman, provincial health officer, amid reports of deaths of mothers who attempted to deliver their babies outside of a hospital.

While the number of maternal deaths from birth in Pangilinan has significantly decreased in Pangasinan over the past years after the provincial government imposed the policy  that no mother should give birth in their homes, still ignorance of some led to their deaths.

Records showed there were 21 maternal deaths registered this year compared to 32 in 2007.

According to De Guzman, two of the victims were young mothers, aged 15 to 16, and died after losing a lot of blood in the process. Others died due to hypertension.

She said in teenage pregnancy, the body constitution of a young mother, may not be strong enough to bear a child, thus the mother’s life is always at risk.

De Guzman said the general policy is for the expectant mother to give birth in hospitals where mothers and their babies can receive adequate care from health professionals. (Leonardo Micua)
