THE Department of Public Works and Highways’ 2nd and 4th Engineering District office has activated its disaster team as a quick response unit in anticipation of flooding in some parts of Pangasinan.

Bernard Caronongan, public information officer of DPWH District Office in Lingayen, said the disaster response unit is composed of four teams that can be deployed to towns under its jurisdiction, to respond to calls to rescue residents who could be trapped by floodwater and to clear roads blocked by fallen trees.

The district office’s dump trucks are assigned to the teams for speedier mobility through flooded areas and to effect evacuation of residents if necessary.

Caronongan said before the onset of the rainy season, the district office already cleared canals to minimize flooding and trimmed extended branches of trees along the roads to prevent unnecessary blocking of roads and highways in case of strong winds.

A flood mitigating program has been implemented in Malued in Dagupan City, particularly elevating road levels in flood prone areas in Dagupan by 8 meters.

The San Jose Creek in Lingayen was also widened to prevent the overflow of water that may cause flooding in areas along the Limajong Channel. (Nora Dominguez)
