5,000 kids interact with journalists
3rd CHILDREN’S SUMMIT ON JOURNALISM
THE participants in the three-day Children Summit on Journalism and exhibits for elementary and high school students from both public and private schools were in agreement that their interaction with renowned journalists have taught them values which otherwise could not be learned from books.
The summit held on January 29 at the CSI Stadia was organized by Dagupan City government led by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez and Department of Education led by Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Lorna G. Bugayong.
The more than 5,000 participants interacted with journalists among them Eva Visperas of The Philippine Star and Sunday Punch, Frank Cimatu of Rappler on editorial writing, Velia Umanos, a journalism teacher in La Union, on feature writing and Gabriel Cardinoza of Philippine Daily Inquirer on Science and Technology writing.
Meanwhile, multi-awarded broadcast journalist Kara David-Cancio stressed the importance of media literacy in nation-building.
She said the children being future journalists, should be able to express and articulate in varied forms the kind of change that embraces the ideals of truth and justice by means of media.
Fourth District Rep. Christopher de Venecia, himself a columnist of the Philippine Star and Chalk Magazine, also shared his skills on feature writing when he delivered his keynote address.
“I was supposed to deliver a Keynote address today, pero I decided that I’ll just make it into some kind of lecture because I want to impart what I know before from my 13 years of being a professional writer and an eight years before that, as an amateur writer,” De Venecia said.
“I’m so excited to be able to connect with the youth, through my passion, through shared commonality between us and I have also much experiences and best practices, and wisdom to impart and share. So if there’s an invitation, I would gladly go,” the young congressman added.
“This Children’s Summit on Journalism is our continuing vote of confidence on the young people of Dagupan who hold so much promise in bringing positive change for our city. As future journalists of Dagupan, we want to nurture a new breed of young active citizens who can move others to seek and pursue positive change,” said Fernandez.
“It is my fervent wish that through this summit, we shall be able to produce a great pipeline of future leaders of the city who shall work for growth and progress, and shall be a positive influence for other Dagupeños to pursue the same,” she said.
