A beauty queen turns lawyer

A BEAUTY queen with roots in Dagupan City, Joy Antonette B. Diaz is now a lawyer, recently passed the California Bar Examination, one of the toughest in the United States.

Jonette, as she is fondly called, is the daughter of Joel and Maritone Diaz and the granddaughter of community leader Ads Diaz of Los Angeles.

Jonette finished her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a Minor in Sociology as Honor Dean’s Lister from California State University. Thereafter, she obtained her Juris Doctor degree (cum laude) in May 2017 at Chapman University, Fowler School of Law in Orange County with full merit scholarship where she also took her oath with the rest of the university’s alumni Bar passers. She ranked in top 5.3 percent of her class.

While at Cal State Irvine, Jonette was a member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity and Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity and one of the editors of Chapman Law Review and Academic Chair of the Student Bar Association, among others.

The statuesque beauty queen at 5’9” was a former Miss Greater Dagupan City Association of California, a former Miss Philippines-USA and Binibining Pilipinas beauty contestant in Manila before she took up her law studies.

After passing the California Bar, Miss Diaz was employed by Sacramento County’s Public Defender Office as Certified Legal Research Assistant representing indigent clients.

Her father, Joel, is a Dagupeño who held residence in Arellano St, Jonette is also the grandniece of former Speaker Joe de Venecia. (Contributed by Ping Coquia)
