Two offers for Dagupan’s new common terminal

TWO groups submitted their intention to the city government to build a common terminal in different locations in Dagupan City, in lieu of the present terminal along M.H. del Pilar Street about to be closed.

One proposal is from the Silverio’s Corporation that intends to build a common terminal at a vacant lot it owns beside the Silverio’s Seafood Restaurant along Arellano Street.

A letter of intent signed by Dr. Abraham Coquia, brother of Councilor Alvin Coquia, for Silverio’s Corporation, was submitted to the office of Mayor Belen Fernandez and subsequently endorsed to the city council.

The other proposal is from Silverio P. Dayao who intends to build a common terminal along Jose de Venecia Road in Barangay Tapuac.

Councilor Coquia, chair of the committee on transportation, said he will inhibit himself from participating in the public hearing on the proposals of the two groups next week.

He said both proponents agreed to build a common terminal on their own on condition that all public utility vehicles plying Dagupan City will be required to use it.

A resolution passed by the city council last week on motion of Councilor Luis Samson Jr. asked the city engineer to look for an area in the city where a common terminal for all public vehicles in the city can be put up.

Earlier, the city council gave all bus, mini-bus companies and commuter vans the ultimatum to remove their existing terminals whose egress and ingress are within 100 meters of a street intersection which are violating a long standing ordinance of the city enacted way back in 1977.

Coquia said it is in conformity with the grand plan of the city to establish a common terminal to be bankrolled either by the private sector or the city.

The Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) recommended the enforcement of the old ordinance after noting that public utility vehicles continue to obstruct the flow of traffic every time their buses, mini-buses and vans are entering or exiting from their respective terminals.

Four big companies -Victory Liner, Five Star and Solid North and its sister company Dagupan Bus maintain their terminals in the eastern end of Perez Boulevard, all within 100 meters from the street junction.

Coquia said a common terminal is in line with the plan for expanded growth centers in the city, one of which is the Pantal-Lucao road area. (Leonardo Micua)
