Urdaneta cop killed, aide wounded in ambush

URDANETA CITY—A police officer was killed in an ambush while his civilian companion was wounded by unidentified suspects along the national highway in Zone 3, Barangay Nancayasan here before dawn Friday in what is suspected to be related to the city’s campaign against illegal drugs.

Superintendent Jeff Fanged, the city police chief, told The PUNCH that Police Officer 3 Marman dela Cuz, 38, resident of Barangay San Vicente here was shot and killed while driving the police‘s mobile patrol car while his aide named Enzo Ruiz, 19 was wounded.

Dela Cruz was rushed to Sacred Heart Hospital where he died around 1:20 a.m. while Ruiz was brought to Urdaneta Emergency Hospital and transferred to Region 1 Medical Center where he is already in stable condition, Fanged said.

The two victims were on their way back to the Police Community Precinct (PCP) in Nancayasan after endorsing a case to the main police station around 11:10 p.m.

When they were about 100 meters away to the PCP, the gunman on board a red Toyota Corolla without a plate number shot them several times. There were about three persons inside the car, the police chief said.

Fanged said scene of the crime operatives recovered 13 empty shells of caliber .40 and four deformed fired bullets of caliber .40 and Glock 17 service firearm of Dela Cruz.

Fanged added that they are looking at the work of Dela Cruz as intelligence officer behind the motive for the killing. His activities for the city police’s intensified campaign against illegal drugs had led to many arrests of drug pushers and seizure of illegal drugs. (Tita Roces)
