Bangus supply for Holy Week assured
THERE will be enough bangus (milkfish) in Pangasinan for households, restaurants and tourists during the meatless days of Lent.
The assurance was made by Dagupan City Agriculturist Emma Molina who said the bangus brought to the Dagupan Fish Market not only come from the fishponds of Dagupan but also from fish cages in western Pangasinan particularly Bolinao, Anda, Alaminos City and Sual.
“It will be a mixture of Dagupan bangus and bangus from Western Pangasinan that will be bought by buyers, many of them from Manila who come to Dagupan usually after attending mass at the Minor Basilica of the Holy Rosary in Manaoag.
The price of milkfish today is P120 per kilo but is expected to go as high as P150 per kilo during the Holy Week, Molina said.
Fishpond owners consider Holy Week as their annual peak season.
She observed that many fish farmers deliberately delay to harvest their stocks to meet the high demand during the Holy Week that fetch a higher price.
Households and visitors are also encouraged to buy oysters and the locally produced blue-lipped mussels which are plentiful in Dagupan whose rivers are safe from red tide.
At the same time, Molina assured that there will be also enough bangus to be grilled when Dagupan will hold a Bangusan street party on April 30, the penultimate activity of the 2016 Bangus Festival, to be followed immediately by Pista ng Dagat or Sea Festival the next day.
During the Bangusan Street Party, some 25,000 pieces of bangus are usually grilled along Jose de Venecia Expressway Extension all of which will be exclusively supplied by fishpond owners of Dagupan. (Leonardo Micua)
