Pangasinan II wins R1AA crown anew; Dagupan is surprise second

SAN CARLOS CITY–Defending champion Pangasinan II won its back-to-back title when it posted a commanding lead over 13 other delegations with a harvest of 70 gold, 46 silver and 43 bronze medals in the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) meet that ended Friday.

But the biggest surprise performance was registered by Dagupan City when it placed first runner-up by amassing 44 gold, 38 silver and 38 bronze medals, improving from a so-so finish (seventh place) in last year’s R1AA meet held in Manaoag, when it could only manage to win only 18 gold medals.

BALON DAGUPAN TEAM’S PERFORMANCE– For the first time, the Balon Dagupan team finished second best in the over-all official ranking in the Region 1 Athletic Association Meet held in San Carlos City, Pangasinan with 44 gold, 38 silver, 38 bronze medals.

From seventh place in last year’s R1AA, Dagupan climbed to number two over-all this year.

Dagupan was declared champion in the elementary level with 20 gold, 17 silver and 18 bronze medals and first runner-up in the secondary level with 24 gold, 21 silver and 20 bronze medals.

Commissioner Finnela T. Sim of the Dagupan City Sports Commission (DCSC) said it is the first time for the city to win the gold in the elementary level and the second spot over-all in the history of R1AA.

The Balon Dagupan swimming team contributed most of the total gold, silver and bronze medals of the city along with arnis, basketball, athletics, chess, badminton, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball and gymnastics.

SECONDARY

In the secondary level, the city’s arnis boys team won one gold, three silver and one bronze medals; the arnis girls team won one silver and three bronze; athletics boys team one silver while the athletics girls team won one bronze while the badminton team in the girls and boys division won one bronze each.

The boys basketball team won gold in a do-or-die finale with Pangasinan II that led by 24 points in the second quarter. The team exacted a good turn-around in the fourth quarter with the three point shots of Russel Manaois ending the game with a four-point win over Pangasinan II for the final score of 84-80.

Basketball girls ended second over a two-point loss to San Carlos City and settled for a silver medal. The boy’s chess team won silver and a bronze.

The gymnastic team also gave a surprise performance by winning five gold, two silver and two bronze in women’s artistic gymnastics; one bronze in men’s artistic gymnastics and another one in rhyme group.

The boys swimming team won 11 gold, six silver and two bronze; while the girl’s team won six gold, four silver and three bronze.

Table tennis girls won one bronze while the taekwondo team girls won two silver and the taekwondo boys team won three bronze medals.

ELEMENTARY

In the elementary level, the city earned gold in arnis (boys) with three silver and two bronze medals while the girls’ team won two gold, three silver and one bronze.

One silver in athletics boys; two silver in badminton boys; one bronze in women’s artistic gymnastics; two bronze in taekwondo boys; one silver in taekwondo girls; and two bronze each in volleyball boys and girls.

The boys swimming team won nine gold, five silver and seven bronze while the girls’ team won seven gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

Schools Division Superintendent Froserfina J. Bravo attributed the city’s success in the R1AA to the city government’s full support under the leadership of Mayor Belen T. Fernandez.

“The top post is already within our reach especially with the results of our performance this year. There can be no doubt that we can get the over-all championship in the R1AA next time,” said Bravo. (CIO)

The defending champion Pangasinan II won big in the secondary division and placed second in the elementary division to preserve its crown.

La Union prevailed in a tight race for third place over Urdaneta City when it harvested 39 gold, 41 silver and 62 bronze medals against the latter’s 39 gold, 33 silver and 30 bronze medals.

Ilocos Norte, a perennial rival of Pangasinan II for the R1AA crown could only manage a disappointing fifth place with 27 gold, 42 silver and 55 bronze medals in its yet most dismal performance since the yearly regional meet started.

Pangasinan 1 landed on sixth place with 23 gold, 19 silver and 50 bronze medals, followed by Ilocos Sur with 20 gold, 25 silver and 22 bronze medals, and Batac City with 18 gold, 21 silver and 13 bronze.

The other finishers are Laoag City (9th) with 18 gold, 18 silver and 32 bronze medals, San Fernando City (10th), 9 gold, 13 silver and 24 medals; Vigan City, five gold, six silver and five bronze; and Candon City, five gold, five silver and 11 bronze medals. (Leonardo Micua)
