GAMBLING AWAY CASH GRANTS

SOME 6, 503 beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program (4Ps), out of 127,143 in Pangasinan, were delisted last year by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 1 due to non-compliance or deviant behavior.

Irene Cubangbang, information officer of DSWD Region said most were disqualified for gambling after failing to heed 3 warnings.

The DSWD is now on its second round of household assessment to update the lists of 4Ps beneficiaries.

Aside from the monthly subsidy, 4Ps members can now avail of the micro-entrepreneur development as livelihood program for them.

Cubangbang explained that through the micro-entrepreneur development, members can form a group and apply for the project.

DSWD will support qualified applicants with training and a P10, 000 capital per family but clarified that the sum is not a subsidy and has to be paid back on installment basis.

“This project has a rollback so that the members will also learn how to earn and be responsible for the capital lent without interest by the government”, said Cubangbang.

DSWD has already issued P281. 8 million cash grant for the first quarter of this year for Pangasinan alone. (Hilda Austria)
