ROSALES—Farmers in 14 towns and cities can begin to expect more income from planting garlic.

This was the assurance given by Engr. Rosendo So, president of Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura, after their initial planting trial yielded encouraging results and the quality of their produce passed the standard set by the Department of Agriculture.

The successful experiments were made in Alaminos City, Malasiqui, Sta. Barbara, Pozorrubio, Laoac, Urdaneta City, Rosales, Sta Maria, Umingan, San Quintin, Balungao, Bayambang and San Carlos City.

The areas were found suitable for planting garlic and the timing was perfect, So said.

These are formerly planted with corn and other crops except rice since garlic grows on sandy loam soil.

Each hectare had a yield of 4.5 tons, he said.

A kilo of native garlic fetches about P100 a kilo. “Even  at P80 per kilo, farmers know that it’s profitable,” he added.

Ilocos Norte remains the top garlic producer in the region supplying 65 percent of the region’s output.

About 15 years ago, Pangasinan farmers stopped planting garlic after they suffered huge losses after importation became rampant. Only Ilocos Norte farmers continued planting garlic, So said. (Tita Roces)
