Mangaldan’s ‘bongbong’ revival gets support
MANGALDAN- What’s safe and indigenous in welcoming the New Year for people?
The local government of Mangaldan deliberately chose to promote the use of bamboo as cannon, otherwise known as “Bongbong” in its annual event “Bongbong Bonanza” specifically for the New Year revelry.
Mayor Bonafe Parayno said the town started the competition on Bongbong-making last year to revive the tradition of using the native cannon in welcoming the New Year’s Day.
“Bongbong was used by our forefathers before firecrackers were invented as they believe the noise it creates drives away evil spirits and as a good luck for the coming year and we wanted the youth to learn about it”, said Parayno.
This year, some 22 entries were submitted made by different barangays.
The testing of the Bongbong was supervised by the Mangaldan police station and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Mangaldan to ensure the safety of participants.
Parayno said the LGU promotes its use since it is more artistic, economical and safe compared to firecrackers. (Hilda Austria)
