Sto. Tomas, certified drug-free town
KNOWN in the province of Pangasinan as the small, quiet but progressive town, Sto. Tomas and its hardworking residents were recently cited as the only certified drug-free town in the country.
The town also emerged as number one in peace and order rating with no major criminality that made it possible to be a drug-free community.
DDB chairman Villar, former Sto. Tomas mayor, is congratulated by former Board Member Von Mark Mendoza after he received his citation as one of ASNA awardees this year.
From the time of Sec. Antonio “Bebot” A. Villar, Jr. served as the mayor, succeeded by his beautiful and workaholic wife, Vivien O. Villar, and today, under the leadership of Mayor Timoteo “Dick” S. Villar III, the municipality has become a model for good governance exemplified by its community leaders and cooperative residents.
Consistently for the past decades, local officials, in strong partnership with the Sto. Tomas police, have been conducting massive awareness campaign contra-illegal drugs with reminders through posters and billboards in different conspicuous places in addition to regular barangay assemblies to continuously inform and educate residents. Each barangay has a ‘Patrol Kontra Droga’ to monitor and deter use of the illegal drugs in the barangays.
Proud of its feat, last June 2014 the Sangguniang Bayan officially declared its town as a drug-free town for others to challenge and emulate.
