TO EASE WORSENING TRAFFIC

CALASIAO—Something has to give, and fast.

The worsening traffic congestion at the town proper aggravated by the road widening and bridge rehabilitation projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has prompted the Macanlalay administration to clamp down not only on colorum tricycles operating in the town but on undisciplined tricycle drivers as well.

Mayor Mark Roy Macanlalay has appointed a traffic czar to oversee the strict enforcement of the town’s ordinance on tricycle franchises and traffic code by traffic enforcers tasked to apprehend tricycle drivers operating without a franchise and the drivers who violate the coding scheme.

As if the on-going road widening project from barangay Mancup to Malabago was not enough to make lives for motorists and residents more difficult, the mayor noted that hundreds of colorum tricycles continue to hog the roads and even defy the town’s coding scheme for tricycles.

“The tricycle drivers who do not comply with the traffic laws add to the problem”, said Macanlalay.

The problem is expected to worsen with the closure of Sta. Barbara- Malasiqui road to traffic, the alternate route for many who avoid the daily gridlock in Calasiao’s town proper.

The land bridge constructed as a temporary replacement to the Balingueo Bridge that is undergoing construction collapsed due to the strong current of the river. It will take a week before it can be restored to traffic.

According to District Engineer Marietta Mendoza, a bailey detour bridge is being rushed and is expected to be completed in a week’s time while a temporary bridge has been built for the convenience of students and residents of the barangay.

Macanlalay said he is confident that the traffic congestion will be eased with the new measures set by the LGU.

“We are hoping for the cooperation of the motorists particularly the tricycle drivers, and the understanding of the public,” the mayor said. (Hilda M. Austria)
