LINGAYEN—The provincial health office (PHO) has alerted local health authorities in 7 towns and one city on the possible increase in number of dengue patients in their localities during the rainy season in a bid to achieve a zero-dengue casualty this year.

According to provincial health officer, Dr. Anna De Guzman, the province has so far been fortunate that no casualty on account of dengue has been has recorded compared to the 12 deaths reported last year over the same period.

Citing PHO’s data, compared to the 2,814 confirmed dengue cases from January to July 28, 2013, this year’s records showed 77 percent decrease with only 661 this year.

Towns with the most number of cases so far are Asingan with 58; Alaminos City and Sual, 38 each; Bolinao, 31; and Mangaldan, 28.

However, De Guzman said that the towns of Asingan, Mapandan, Bautista, San Manuel, Infanta, and Pozorrubio are also being monitored closely based on last year’s experience.

She reminded barangay officials about the 4S in the campaign against dengue: Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, Self-protection by wearing long-sleeved shirts, Seek early advise or consultation at the nearest health center, and Say “No” to indiscriminate fogging even as she also warned of other water-borne diseases like leptospirosis, gastroenteritis, and typhoid fever.
