MANGATAREM SHOOTOUT

LINGAYEN— The slain suspect in a hand grenade throwing incident that wounded a cop in Mangatarem town last Friday was identified as one of four gunmen in the Quezon City rampage last May that killed four victims in separate shooting incidents.

P/Sr. Supt. Sterling Raymund Blanco, OIC-police director of Pangasinan, said the slain suspect was identified as Mohammad “Walad” Sandigan Mautin by the Quezon City Police Station’s team of investigators that has been tracking him down.

It will be recalled that last May 11, 2014 at around 1:30 a.m. along Commonwealth Avenue and Regalado Avenue in Quezon City, four persons were randomly shot dead in a shooting spree.

Mautin’s identity was confirmed by the QC police probers when they came to Pangasinan the day he was gunned down.

It will be recalled that Mautin and his two unidentified companions on board a Toyota Tamaraw FX with plate number UKR 716 with black and orange camouflage color sped off in when flagged down by policemen in a checkpoint in Bugallon town late evening of. Thursday, July 17.

The police gave chase and a firefight ensued prompting one of the suspects to lob a hand grenade at the pursuing policemen, wounding PO2 Ryan Cano of Bugallon Municipal Police Station.

Cano was rushed to a nearby hospital due to shrapnel wound he sustained at the back of his head.

When the pursuing police tracked the van used by Mautin and his companions in a house owned by former Councilor Raymundo Cruz in Barangay Ponglo Baleg in Mangatarem, they were immediately fired upon.

Mautin was seen throwing a hand grenade at the policemen but it did not explode and he was eventually shot dead in the firefight that also wounded two minor children of Cruz, aged 12 and 13 who were caught in the crossfire.

Blanco said investigators recovered shabu of undetermined weight in the possession of Mautin.

Mautin’s two other companions fled while Cruz was still nowhere to be found as of last Wednesday and is now the subject of a manhunt as well to explain why the suspects’ vehicle was inside his house premises.

Meanwhile the vehicle owner was identified as Maieng Abdulazis, single, businessman and resident of Barangay Arellano of this town who is facing cases for frustrated murder and presently on bail.
