LINGAYEN—A man believed to be suffering from depression drowned himself and his two sons in the creek beneath the San Jose Bridge in this town late morning of November 10, 2013.

Reports from authorities say that Efren Sison, 43, resident of Barangay Maniboc here, first threw his two sons — 11-year-old Dave and 10-year-old Dranreb — into the creek then jumped in immediately after.

Witnesses claimed that one of the sons attempted to save himself by swimming towards the bank but his father pulled him back into the water.

The body of Sison was first to be recovered after 2 hours while his sons’ were found another hour later by rescue teams of both Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Councils of both the province and the Lingayen and Philippine Coast Guard.
They were brought to the nearest hospital but all three were pronounced dead.

Witnesses said Sison was depressed over the alleged extramarital affair of his wife.

Initial investigation showed that before the tragic drowning incident, Sison, with his sons as passengers in their tricycle, intentionally attempted a heads-on collision between his tricycle and a van coming from the opposite direction along the National Highway, about 30 meters away from the San Jose Bridge area.

The van managed to avoid Sison’s tricycle, which instead hit the single-motorcycle behind the van.

The driver of the motorcycle, Florante Castro, sustained injuries on his left hand and leg.–Johanne R. Macob
