LINGAYEN—About 70 personnel from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will be deployed around the province before May 5 to augment the local police force for the May 13 elections.

This was announced by Deputy for Integrated Police Operations (DIPO) Northern Luzon Director James Bucayu last April 15 during a visit to the Pangasinan Provincial Police Office to check on the implementation of the Safe and Fair Elections (SAFE) 2013 contained in Memo Circular 01-13.

“We are reiterating what is embodied in this circular especially the conduct of operations against crime groups, service of warrant of arrest, Oplan Katok, ‘yong para sa renewal ng license ng firearms…” Bucayu said.

Bucayu also reviewed the plans for the deployment of police personnel to secure the delivery of Precinct Count Optical Scanner (PCOS) machines.

The military unit will be assigned at checkpoints, polling centers, and police precincts and to assist in securing the transfer of PCOS.

The Commission on Elections provincial office announced last week that at least 783 (PCOS) machines already arrived last April 15 in Dagupan and Urdaneta cities, two of three designated holding areas in Pangasinan.

Bucayu said Pangasinan, which is one of the provinces listed as an area of concern for the elections, remains “generally peaceful” despite campaign-related violent incidents in several towns.

The towns categorized as areas of immediate concern are Bolinao, Dasol, Infanta, Agno, Urbiztondo, Bugallon, Malasiqui, Rosales, Balungao and San Manuel and the cities of Alaminos, Dagupan and San Carlos.– Johanne R. Macob
