LINGAYEN—This capital town leads 12 towns and cities in Pangasinan that have been placed under tight watch by the Provincial Health Office due to the increasing cases of dengue.

Dr. Anna de Guzman, provincial health officer, speaking before the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, noted that Lingayen tops the list of dengue cases recorded from January 1 to June 11 this year.

The other areas under tight watch are San Carlos, Urdaneta and Alaminos cities, and the municipalities of Bugallon, Calasiao. Malasiqui, Sta. Barbara, Urbiztondo, San Manuel, Bayambang, Umingan, Tayug, Rosales and Villasis.

On the other hand, number of dengue cases decreased in Agno, Mangatarem, San Jacinto, Binalonan, Laoac, Pozorrubio and Sison.

Citing statistics, De Guzman revealed that dengue cases increased by 15 percent this year to 628 compared to 536 in the same period last year.

In Lingayen, the number of dengue cases increased from 11 in the first six months last year to 64 this year.

She, however, noted that most of the cases in Lingayen were registered in the first quarter of the year and no cases were registered from April to May, which are considered hot months.

She said the PHO is looking into the possibility that there are adult dengue carrying mosquitoes in Barangay Libsong East, Lingayen where most of the 64 cases were registered.

De Guzman was invited by the SP to render a report on the safety of schools all over Pangasinan from dengue since classes have just opened last June 4.

As a precaution, she has advised students to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants as extra protection from dengue-carrying mosquitoes which commonly attack in the daytime.

The teachers have also been urged to install treated mosquito nets at the classroom windows.

Acting Vice Governor Jeremy Agerico Rosario, a doctor by profession, called for a 24-hour vigilance as he confirmed that there are studies showing dengue-carrying mosquitoes now also attack at night time.
