Jr. chess player brings home gold

SINGAPORE CHESS FESTIVAL

A PANGASINENSE was among the four Filipino woodpushers who brought home gold medals from the Singapore International Chess Festival held at the Jurong East Sports Complex on January 1.

Dennis Gutierrez III, who comes from a chess-playing family in San Fabian town, posted 8 points by beating Jiddan Firman of Indonesia in the final round to win the gold medal in the Under-8 category.

Gov. Amado Espino Jr., who has been promoting chess in the province, lauded the accomplishment of Gutierrez, a regular participant in tournaments organized by the Pangasinan Chess Club and the provincial government.

Gutierrez’s siblings, Dennis Jr. and Myka Sofia, are also regular participants in tournaments.

Their father, Dennis Gutierrez, is a national master.

The other gold medallists in the Singapore tournament were International Chess Federation (FIDE) Master Paulo Bersamina, Open U-14 category; Vince Angelo Medina, Open U-17; and Michelle Yaon, Girls U-17.

Jerad Docena of Bohol took home a silver medal in the Open U-14 category of this nine-round event, while Marc Christian Nazario (Open U-17), Julius Gonzales (Open U-11), Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem (Girls U-11), and Mae Ann Joy Baclayon (Girls U-8) hauled in bronze medals.
