THE Provincial Population Office (PPO) is pushing for natural family planning (NFP) methods, a move that has earned the nod of the religious sector.

Alex Sevilla, population program officer, said the PPO has been sending out teams to the barangays to inform young couples about responsible parenthood and the various natural family planning methods.

“We give them informed choices and encourage them to use NFP,” Sevilla said during the Pantongtongan Tayo radio program of the Philippine Information Agency aired Tuesday.

Sevilla explained the five NFP methods that the government is promoting are: the cervical mucus, body basal temperature, sympto thermal and the cycle beads or the standard days method.

The calendar and withdrawal methods which used to be the more popular methods are not being promoted anymore as they are not scientifically proven to be effective, he added.

“As to the effectiveness, all of the NFP methods being promoted have failure rates but compared to others, they have very high success rates,” Sevilla explained.

Ellsworth Gonzales, PPO field operations division head, said evaluating the impact of the population program is a tedious process but a quantifiable form is gathering statistics among husbands and wives using family planning methods, whether natural or artificial, have increased.

The Responsible Parenthood team, composed of personnel from the population, health, social welfare offices and the Catholic Church, has covered 12 LGUs since 2009, including Umingan, San Nicolas, Natividad, Binalonan, Villasis, Sison, Pozzorubio, Mangaldan, San Fabian, Manaoag, Bugallon and Aguilar.

More than 5,000 young couples have participated in the orientations, Gonzales said. (Venus May H. Sarmiento, PIA-Pangasinan)
