MANAOAG–The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) regional office has identified and helped 50 child laborers from this town.

The children regularly sold religious items, prayer books, candles, lucky charms and sampaguita garlands around the premises of the Our Lady of Manaoag Shrine, a popular pilgrimage site for Catholics.

DOLE Regional Director John Henry Jalbuena said the child laborers were provided assistance under project “Angel Tree”, which comprises a wide range of social services for child laborers such as education/training, counseling and mentoring, livelihood, clothing, food, shelter and medical assistance.

“The provision of continuing care to child labor victims and their families is in line with International Conventions calling for the elimination of the worst forms of child labor,” Jalbuena said.

The services are made available through a network of supporters of efforts against child labor. Donors of the program are called “angels”.

Acting as “angel” for the 50 recipients in Manaoag was Redeza Pidlaoan representing the GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc., Dagupan City.

Jalbuena added that DOLE Region 1 is looking into the possibility of providing the children’s families with livelihood assistance to improve their economic conditions.
