MANGALDAN–Gina de Venecia, running for the 4th district congressional seat, said she is happy with how the Women’s and Children’s Concern Desk  (WCCD) in every police station throughout the country have benefited communities.

De Venecia, speaking to newsmen in Barangay Guilig here on Thursday, recalled what prompted her to sign a memorandum of agreement in 1997 with then Local Government Secretary Robert Barbers for the setting up of WCCD to focus on the plight of abused women and children.

De Venecia, wife of outgoing 4th District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr., was then president of the Congressional Espouses Foundation, Inc. (CEFI).

The WCCD is manned by policewomen who give special attention and maximum attention to women and children who come for help against domestic violence.

As CEFI president, De Venecia also initiated the establishment of Haven for Women and a separate Haven for Children in Alabang, Metro Manila. There are now branches in Bonuan Binloc, Dagupan City and other key cities throughout the country.

These centers take care of raped women and street children and help them pursue improved lives.–LM
