BARANGAY Libsong in Lingayen seems to be a fertile breeding ground for politicians.

Three out of the seven candidates for the 2nd District congressional seat come from this community, all bearing impressive credentials: Leopoldo Bataoil, Arthel Caronongan and Nestor Reyes.

BATAOIL

Retired police director Bataoil, easily the most prominent of the three, was recently appointed as head of police directorate for Integrated Police Operations in Northern Luzon.

Caronongan, a lawyer recently resigned as Assistant Justice Secretary, previously served as Associate Commissioner of Commission on Immigration and Deportation. He is also a former provincial board member.

Reyes, meanwhile, is a three-term provincial board member representing the second district of Pangasinan.

Bataoil, a late replacement of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, is running under the administration party Lakas-Kampi-CMD; Caronongan with the Liberal Party; and Reyes is with the Nacionalista Party.

Another formidable opponent of the three is Kim Lokin, a lady candidate under the United Nationalist People’s Coalition, a former partylist representative in Congress who hails from Labrador and Binmaley.

Meanwhile, Bataoil who expressed confidence that he is obviously the choice of the people of Libsong, said he already ironed out differences with Lingayen Mayor Ernesto Castañeda, his party mate in the Lakas- Kampi-CMD, who expressed some reservations about him because Bataoil’s   brother Ramon, an incumbent Lingayen town   councilor, joined the ticket of Castaneda’s opponent, Jose Ferrer.—LM
