ALAMINOS CITY–Welcome the Reef Rangers.

The new group, organized with the help of US Peace Corp volunteer Garrett E. Feldpausch, aims to complement the Alaminos City government’s efforts to protect the marine ecosystem at the Hundred Islands National Park.

Feldpausch said the Reef Rangers’ work will revolve around the Buhay Dagat (Life in the Sea) program, which promotes guided snorkel tours around the Hundred Islands as a means of alternative livelihood among members of the town’s fishing communities.

Aside from providing guided snorkel tours, the Reef Rangers conduct environmental education, habitat monitoring, beach clean-ups and the promotion of eco-friendly tourism for residents.

The members of the Reef Rangers, chosen by the local government from the coastal communities in December last year, underwent a training program on skills development on community-based enterprise and eco-tourism.

Feldpausch said the new recruits have pledged to continue their efforts for environmental awareness in the coastal villages. #
