Number of fishpens in Dagupan just right
THE number of fish pens in Dagupan has not reached their allowable limit.
This was assured by City Agriculture Officer Emma Molina who pointed out that the number of privately-owned fish pens in the city is still within the limited carrying capacity of the rivers.
Some sectors in the city recently expressed alarm over the continuous unloading of bamboo poles at the Jose R. de Venecia Expressway Extension, an indication of plans to erect new fish pens.
Molina explained that this should not be cause for worry as the current rainy season is not the time for setting up fish pens on a river, particularly in are as close to the water exit to the sea.
“Many of our fish pens located in rivers that serve as exit point of water to the sea do not operate during this period of the year, except for some that have the capacity to withstand the onslaught of typhoons,” she said.
She also stressed that the city government issues, with a corresponding fee, Aqua-culture Lease Agreement (ALA) to individuals seeking to build fish pens in any river in the city, which allows the city government to monitor and limit the number of pens that will be set up.—LM
